For her PhD, Theresa moved to Freiburg. It seemed like a nice place to live. And, well, Wolfgang Driever had his lab there. Wolfgang was a leading scientist in the study of genetic factors in embryonic brain development, using zebrafish as a model organism. Zebrafish are transparent during development, easily to be genetically modified and just plain adorable. Perfect fit for Theresa, who well in love the little fish during her Bachelor’s thesis. So Wolfgang’s lab allowed her to combined that with her interests in neuroscience, genetics and embryology.
Her research zoomed in on the transcription factor Bsx, a protein that, from previous work from the Driever Lab was implied to be crucial for the differentiation of dopaminergic neurons. So Theresa set out to check this role for Bsx.
